My Reading List is a website that schools can use to engage students in wider reading.
My Reading List provides a place for students to log their reading and write short reviews. It engages students through the hooks of technology, competition and the social aspect of reading other student reviews.
My Reading List can help to enable dialogue between teachers and students about reading.
Students
Students log into My Reading List to log the books they read. They can give books a rating, record the number of words and write a short review. Once the review has been approved by a teacher/librarian, it will be visible to other students. Students can browse other reviews sorted by genre. An optional feature is to enable students to ‘like’ other reviews.
Teacher/Librarian View
This view can show the totals for number of books read and words read. These totals can be shown by house, year level, class and student. These statistics can be used to raise the profile of reading via staff briefing, assemblies, newsletters and in class. English teachers and the teacher librarians can see at a glance how members of a class are progressing. The staff view can drill down to the individual student to see their book titles and reviews.
Engagement
The online nature of the program makes logging the books a fun activity. The competition of contributing to class and house totals can also be motivating. Creating reviews that others can read encourages participation. The program also facilitates reading conferences between teacher and students. These conferences are essential supports for a successful independent reading program.
